The Google Backup and Sync app is required for this tip to work, not the Google Drive app. So if you have the latter on your Mac, remove it.

Note: After completing all Google Drive procedures, you will be able to access multiple Google Drives using the Backup and Sync icons in the menu bar. For some reason Google Drive has two different desktop apps. There’s consumer-grade backup and sync, and of course Drive (formerly Drive File Stream) for enterprise desktops. Google plans to connect these apps into a unified driver for the desktop by the end of the year, and to kick things off, it’s rolling out a major update that makes desktop apps much easier and faster to use.

The most important improvement is support for multiple accounts. In previous versions of Drive for desktop, users had to manually sign in and out for each account they signed in to. Desktop version 49 supports 4 accounts, and you can switch between them by clicking your profile picture in the Drive desktop app.

However, the PC version of Drive also offers some improvements in important functionality (namely backing up and synchronizing files). You can choose which files and folders you want to automatically sync with Drive. This will automatically transfer all the photos backed up in Drive for desktop to your Google Photos account. (Previously, uploaded photos were in Drive like any other file.) Of course, this only happens when Google runs out of unlimited storage for your photo service.

Interestingly, Google Drive for desktop now offers the ability to transfer files from the cloud. In previous versions, media files had to be displayed before use.

The latest Google Drive upgrade is compatible with Windows and macOS. According to Google, the client is now faster on both operating systems and has improved backup of files from macOS iCloud and Photo Library. It also excels at backing up data from external drives.

Google is currently rolling out version 49 of Drive for desktop, but it may take some time for it to appear on your computer. Starting in September, users currently using Backup and Sync will be asked to switch to Drive for desktop. Google will officially end Backup and Sync in October of this year. If you don’t change it, automatic backups to Google Drive will stop working from your desktop.
