How To Set Up Your Own Email Domain

How To Set Up Your Own Email Domain – Apple is testing a feature of iCloud Mail that power users have been asking for for years: custom email domains. What does that mean? Many people use free email services like iCloud Mail and Gmail, where all email addresses use a predefined domain. For example, if you use iCloud Mail, your address would be something like [protected email] (or [protected email] or [protected email]). Also, if you use a free Gmail account, your address would be something like [email protected]. protected] goes hand in hand

However, if you have a custom domain name, such as, most email services will allow you to use that domain for your email address. It offers several advantages:

How To Set Up Your Own Email Domain

Personally, I don’t trust iCloud Mail for anything other than verification. Lack of support for custom domains was one reason, but even now I can’t switch. iCloud Mail lacks many of the advanced features of other email providers and has been known to silently filter messages to retrieve them or even know they were sent.

Use Your Own Domain For Email

However, there are some good reasons to use iCloud Mail, especially if you bought into the Apple ecosystem:

Apple doesn’t sell domains, so you’ll need to purchase domains from a domain registrar before setting up a custom email address. Entire books have been written on buying and managing domains, but the process is quite simple. Here are some loggers we have used with success:

I currently host my domains on Epik due to the company’s strong stance on civil liberties and excellent 24/7 support. However, if you are new to domain registration, I refer you to Hover. It is the most helpful registrar I have ever used, with excellent phone support. If you started with one domain registrar and want to switch to another, you can change your domain at any time, although you’ll usually have to pay an additional year to do so.

Once you have a domain, be sure to renew it annually or pay for multi-year registration. Set a reminder to renew a few weeks before it expires. When your renewal date arrives, make sure your payment information is up to date. I almost lost the domain once due to a payment issue with Hover. Domain hijackers often take expired domains and try to sell them back to their owners at exorbitant prices.

Icloud: Use A Custom Domain For An Apple Mail Address

You must have a valid email address at your domain to set up iCloud Mail, because Apple will send a confirmation email to that address. If you’re setting up a new email address, it’s a bit tricky, but don’t worry, most registrars let you create a free forwarding address that does the job. Remember to do this before you start setting up your domain in iCloud Mail.

Below is a screenshot of setting up a forwarding address for one of my Epik domains. I have set [Secure Email] to forward incoming emails to my primary email address. This allowed me to receive a confirmation email from Apple.

(I bought when my friend Sonya Mann and I were thinking about starting a podcast called Mannsplaining. Unfortunately, we both later realized that we didn’t have enough time to host a podcast and I haven’t used the domain for anything since …)

All caveats aside, let’s take a look at the process of setting up your custom domain to work with iCloud Mail:

Custom Email Provider

If you forgot to set up a work email address before you started (raises hand), you can click Resend verification emails on this screen to resend them.

Check your email inbox for a verification email from Apple. Once received, open it and click Confirm. If your default browser doesn’t support iCloud beta, you can Control-click the Verify button in Mail and choose Open With > Safari or another installed browser. In other mail clients, you should be able to control-click Authenticate, copy the URL, and paste it into your browser.

This is where things get tricky: you may need help from your domain registrar. You will need to set up the appropriate DNS records with your registrar, and how to do this will vary by registrar. If you contact your registrar support and provide the details, they may be able to prepare the logs or at least direct you to the necessary instructions.

In the simplest possible terms, DNS records are instructions for how DNS servers should handle requests for a domain. DNS is Domain Name System and is a collection of interconnected DNS servers that make it possible to access a domain rather than a numerical IP address.

How Do I Send Emails From My Own Domain?

Look in your iCloud inbox for the “Finish setting up your custom domain” email to get the records you need, but don’t follow the instructions in that email!

You must enter all of these DNS records for your domain correctly on the registrar’s site. If you forget something or make a mistake, email from your domain may be automatically rejected or flagged by spam filters.

If you use your domain for non-email services, these records shouldn’t interfere with those services as long as you don’t overwrite existing entries. However, if you set up email forwarding with your registrar or already use your domain with another email provider, you must remove the relevant DNS entries for that provider. (If you want to change it back, make a note of the removed information in Notes or something.) If you’ve set up a custom email domain in the past, I’m assuming you have an idea of what you’re doing. . If not, I recommend contacting your registrar support.

Apple’s email instructions were wrong, so I had a lot of trouble resetting the DNS records! Until Apple fixes the email, please refer to Apple’s support documentation, which provides the correct instructions in the correct order. You will need to go back to Apple Email for step 5 as it contains your unique personal TXT entry.

How To Authorise Freeagent To Send Emails From Your Business Address

Your registrar may look different, but as you can see in the screenshot below, in Epik, I was able to leave all the host fields blank. but together

Once you have successfully entered all the DNS records into your registry, go back to iCloud settings and click Finish setup. You will be prompted to verify that you have updated your DNS records before clicking Confirm.

If you’ve updated your records with the Registry, you might see a DKIM error when you click Check on the iCloud page. Some things you should know:

You’ll know it’s working if you get a confirmation email from iCloud. Your other devices will ask if you want to use the new email address for iMessage and FaceTime.

Personal Email Domain

To choose a different outgoing email address when composing a message, click or tap the address to the right of the From field. In Mail on the iCloud beta website, your new address is displayed immediately. In the beta version of iOS 15, it took a few minutes to appear. However, it doesn’t show up at all in non-beta iCloud Mail or the operating systems Apple currently ships with.

It’s great that Apple has added support for custom domains to iCloud Mail, but I highly recommend limiting your use to testing. Aside from the fact that you can only send email from a beta version of Apple’s upcoming operating systems, I can’t recommend relying on a beta service for mission-critical email. When Apple promotes the feature in beta, many people will start using it and we will feel how reliable it is.
