If you work for a large company, health insurance can be like a new car, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s 2020 Employer Health Benefits Survey. Kaiser found that the average annual premium for family coverage in 2020 was $21,342, which is the same as the MSRP of $22,715 for the base model 2022 Honda Civic.

Employees contributed an average of $5,588 in annual costs, meaning employers received 73% of the premium bill. The average premium for one worker in 2020 was $7,470. Of that, workers paid $1,243 or 17%.

Kaiser combined high-cost health plans with health maintenance organizations (HMOs), PPOs, point-of-care plans (PPOs) and savings options (HDHPs/SOs) to arrive at an average premium figure. It found that PPOs were the most common type of plan, with 47% of covered workers having insurance. HDHP/SOs account for 31% of the insured.
