There are many good domain name registrars. I personally have good experience with Porkbun and Namecheap. Other registrars are Cloudflare, Gandi or Name. Try to stay away from GoDaddy if possible – I’ve heard of not-so-good experiences with them. A domain name should cost around $10 per year. When looking for a registrar, look for one that offers free Whois privacy. This should be a standard feature. When you register your domain, you will be asked to enter correct information such as your full name and address. Whois privacy hides this information from the public and acts as an intermediary when someone needs to contact the owner of a domain name.

Your domain name should be set to automatically renew after you register it. It’s important, turn it on!

If you forget to renew your domain name and lose it, you will lose your email and access to all accounts associated with it. Even big companies like Google can forget to renew their domain name. Fortunately, most registrars will send you a few reminders when your domain is about to expire.

Additionally, I recommend that you do not use identifying information such as your real name in your domain name, just as a good privacy measure.

Setting Up Private Name Servers

There are several important factors to consider when choosing your email host. Cost, Privacy and Usability. Note that your mail server must be reliable. Hypothetically, all email servers, including Gmail, can receive and read your email if they are not end-to-end encrypted.

This allows emails sent to your domain name to be forwarded to a specific email address. This means you can sign up for websites with an email like [email protected], or [email protected] and get them all.

We’ll cover how to set this up specifically with TutaNota, but for reference I’ve also included links to the official host on how to set up DNS records and shared email.

Generally, the purpose of setting up a record is for the email host to verify that you are the owner of the domain name. This is usually done by adding a TXT record with a specific value. The second step is to add an MX (mail exchange) record to the servers where your email is hosted.
