I bought a Yahoo Small Business hosting plan and set up a generic website. I’m using a sample website to run these tests. Read more about how I test.

Their installation process was very frustrating. They forced me to create a YahooID, tried to transfer my domain from my registrar to them, and my admin panel was down for an hour. You will also need to manually install phpMyAdmin and refer to the FTP instructions yourself. This is after upgrading from their basic plan as it doesn’t support FTP (which plan doesn’t have FTP?!)

I use Pingdom to report website uptime. Pingdom is configured to send an HTTP request to the host every minute and will report when it is unreachable. It reports an error if the host takes more than 30 seconds to respond (yes, that’s not true, but if your site takes too long to respond, it’s unusable in my opinion). Pingdom runs this test from a minimum of 3 servers worldwide, and reports a problem if 2/3 servers fail to respond. This test is important (it’s important!) if you care about your web host’s reliability.

Yahoo is an equal leader in uptime testing for small businesses, with an average score of 99.85 percent. The best result was 100,000%, but it was a measly 82,778%. Yahoo Small Business’s latest result was 100,000% on March 16. Yahoo started strong with their credibility, but took a nosedive in November. Some disruptions last for hours at a time – almost every day for two weeks. If they don’t join forces soon, I’d be wary of Yahoo.

This test is performed by submitting a typical website served on the host to WebPageTest and recording how long it takes to load. This test website is 56 KB HTML, 287 KB JavaScript, 51 KB CSS, and 1,128 KB images (these are typical according to the HTTP archive). WebPageTest (an independent third-party system) uses servers in Virginia and California to measure page load performance in the latest version of Chrome over a high-speed Internet connection. The test is performed every 5 times and the middle (average) result is calculated from each location. Then the East Coast and West Coast times are averaged, eliminating biases due to server location. We are interested in the first page load, not the replay/caching scenario. If you’re really interested, I’ll use WebPageTest’s “load time” metric to rank page speed. In addition to server settings scores that translate into numbers, I still collect other metrics such as TTFB (time to first byte), fully loaded time, and speed index. These detailed values can be viewed in “Raw Results”. This test is important if your site looks like a regular website and you’re concerned about speed (and you should be!) In September 2014 I took this test more closely and you’ll notice that the page speed is slightly higher. For that height. The test was performed only 3 times from one location with a simulated cable Internet connection in Internet Explorer 11. The new method gives more consistent results.

Yahoo Small Business performs well in the speed test, with an average result of 3.84 seconds. The best result was 2.00 seconds but it was as bad as 60.96 seconds. The latest result for Yahoo Small Business was 3.00 seconds on January 4. Yahoo isn’t one I expect to do well, but they’re nothing to joke about when it comes to speed. Their performance headers could be improved a bit, but generally they don’t wait for your site to load.

Some people think that Yahoo is sucking up small businesses. Here are some real benchmarks to show you the speed, reliability and support of Yahoo Small Business – so you can see if they really suck.

This test measures the total time it takes to load a static web page. The lower the better. Learn more about page speed testing.

How To Set Up Web Hosting

With an average result of 2.53 seconds, the stable host performs like a star in the speed test. The best result was 0.00s but it was 12.29s. The last result from StableHost was on January 4 at 0.00s. Stablehost is one of the few hosts that routinely has page load times under 3 seconds – that’s great. They have optimized all topics for performance (compression, caching, connections) and their stats support this.

DreamHost is an incredible leader in speed tests, with an average result of 2.65 seconds. Best result was 0.00s but it was 21.25s. The last result from DreamHost was on January 4 at 0.00s. I expected Dreamhost to perform poorly, but it turned out to be that bad. There are faster hosts, but they won’t disappoint.

HostGator performs above average in the speed test, with an average result of 2.7 seconds. The best result was 2.00 seconds but it was as bad as 15.02 seconds. HostGator’s last result was at 2pm on January 4th. HostGator used to share a data center with SoftLayer – and they were lightning fast. Now that they’ve moved them all to their own data centers (after the EIG buyout), page speeds have gotten worse, though not as bad as some of the hosts here.

GoDaddy performs fantastically in speed tests, averaging 2.8 seconds. The best result was 0.31s, but it was 37.97s. GoDaddy’s last shutdown on January 4 was 2:00s. GoDaddy consistently has the fastest page load speeds. This is due to having an excellent hosting optimization team led by Dave Koopman. After seeing this site, he approached me not only to give me credit for this, but also to provide additional testing resources (which I’m not currently using). Anyway, he is very excited about their hosting performance and their stats prove it.

Bluehost performs well in the speed test, with an average result of 2.89 seconds. The best result was 0.00 seconds, but it was as bad as 9.17 seconds. The last result from Bluehost was on January 4 at 2pm. Bluehost is usually not entirely consistent with its page speeds – sometimes faster than other hosts, sometimes slower. The slowest times are usually when approaching the east coast. When they optimize links and compress images, they fail to properly set the cache for repeat rendering.

InMotion Hosting leads the average in the speed test, with an average result of 2.93 seconds. The best result was 0.00s, but it was 14.12s. InMotion Hosting’s last result was on January 4 at 7:00 PM. InMotion has been found to be consistent in its page speed results and usually shows no spikes or erratic performance. When optimizing links, they can make things faster by compressing images and setting cache headers correctly.

MDDHosting is an incredible leader in speed tests, with an average result of 2.93 seconds. The best result was 2.00 seconds but it was as bad as 74.96 seconds. MDDHosting’s last result was on January 4th with 2.00 seconds. I’ve heard great things about MDDHosting and I thought their speeds were comparable, but it had a few hiccups. Lately they have gotten better, but in October I saw fit times in excess of 10 seconds – wow bad! However, they are one of the few hosts that have upgraded all of their server systems.

Namecheap is an incredible leader in speed tests, with an average result of 3.04 seconds. The best result was 2.00 seconds but it was as bad as 72.71 seconds. Namecheap’s last result was on January 4 at 2 p.m. Namecheap proves they have consistent, low page load times. Their stats are what other hosts struggle with, though I bet it could be improved by enabling compression and caching headers.

Yahoo Legacy Product Update

Site5 leads the average in the speed test, with an average result of 3.05 seconds. The best result was 0.00s, but it was bad
